your spine, our passion
about our practice
The Robotic Spine Institute of Silicon Valley was pioneered by our world renowned orthopedic and neurologically trained spine surgeon Kornelis Poelstra. Based in Los Gatos, our institute has developed an outstanding reputation for delivering immaculate care from the best spine surgeons and technology innovators in the world.
We collaborate closely with physicians and medical professionals to not only bring you outstanding care, but also advance the technologies that allow our spine surgeons to treat your neck and back pain more efficiently than ever before.
We wholeheartedly believe that optimal treatment begins with making sure we’re taking a personal approach when it comes to our patients and care.
We dedicate our practice to spend as much time as needed to thoroughly understand your spinal difficulties and troubles even after we’ve treated you.
Since starting my career as a Spine Surgeon in 2006, I value being able to develop relationships with my patients. Every spine solution must be catered specifically to your lifestyle and your goals. Although I am a firm believer in conservative treatment without surgery, sometimes alternatives have to be considered. My promise is to genuinely understand your history and your goals before getting you back to being pain free. When I do reccomend spine surgery, I focus on the most minimally invasive techniques while utilizing state-of-the-art technology, right in the cradle of innovation here in Silicon Valley.
As a board certified spine surgen that specializes in minimally invasive spine surgeries, I also focus on adult spinal deformity (”scoliosis”) and disk replacements. I’ve had the opportunity to co-develop the currently available spine robotic platforms and have performed more than 750 complex robotic cases so far - more than any other spine surgeon in the world.
My research has also been focused on preventing implant associated wound infections, along with innovative materials sciences for both spine and orthopedic implants. I’ve been trained in both orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery at world leading institutions. I’ve received my PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
At the Robotic Institute of Silicon Valley within OrthNorCal, we bring together a team of world-class clinicians, allowing me to continuiously tech surgeons from around the world using Robotics. So far, I’ve written dozens of peer reviewed publications, textbooks and chapters, and have given more than 250 lectures.
I’m looking forward to the opportunity to serve my community and advance the profession of Spinal Surgery through evidence based progress in Robotics and Automation.
We’re proud to share our results from our outstanding spine srugeries performed to date. Although these results show that our institute provides some of the best spine care and treatment in the world, we at the Robotic Spine Institute of Silicon Valley are consistently evaluating and improving our methods. We believe that our passion for improvement is what drives us to set new standards in the field of spine surgery.

“Outstanding doctor!!!! Went to my first visit and wow he was absolutely awesome. He thoroughly explained to me everything about my case and he told it to me that I would understand. He is an overachiever with lots of energy, willing to take complicated and challenging cases, which mine is. So two days later I had neck surgery and everything went perfect, it was straight again. Dr. Poelstra is intelligent and knows everything about what he trained to be. I knew the first time when I left his office I was very confident he was the right surgeon. Doctor to patient relations are wonderful. Thank you Dr. Poelstra for doing everything you do.”
“Just had a complex cervical spine surgery performed by Dr. Poelstra. My osteoporosis certainly made the surgery more of a challenge. Dr. Poelstra devoted a lot of time and attention to my particular problems before coming up with a solution. I'm very happy with the outcome. Am also thrilled to report not only did the surgery go well, but I have experienced zero pain and am still pain free, 3 weeks post-surgery. Yes, the neck brace one must wear following surgery is hot this time of year, but a minor trade off for regaining erect, pain free posture. The Doctor and his staff were most personable and easy to deal with; any questions I had were responded to quickly. A very definite TWO THUMBS UP!!”
“Dr. Poelstra goes above and beyond in every aspect of his practice! From the first visit I knew I had the right surgeon to do my spine surgery. His knowledge and experience made me feel comfortable right away. His "bedside manner" is over the top. He actually listens, encourages and answers questions all the while ensuring you he truly cares and looks forward to making you whole again. My surgery was a tremendous success and I haven't felt this good in years!!!”
I had Lumbar spine surgery over 4 weeks ago with Dr. Poelstra. From start to finish, he and his team were extremely professional and pleasant. Dr. Poelstra has a keen ability to explain things in plain terms, as well as answer any questions either I had or my wife. I woke up from surgery and the pins and the burning in my legs was already gone. I look forward to the AWESOME care with the Spine Institute.
I've had back and leg weakness and pain for over 2 years. Couldn't walk more than 25 ft, didn't sleep for more than an hour at a time and the medications weren't any help. Dr Poelstra was confident he could help me and when I woke up from the surgery I no longer had any leg pain and had full strength in my leg. Now I'll tell you the surgery was painful but nothing like I'd been living with. I can sleep again and walk upright!!. THANK YOU! You and your team are positive, informative and forthright. I had total confidence in you before this big surgery and am so grateful you helped me. Thank you for giving me my life back.
Talk about having confidence in my surgeon and the PA! I did not even meet my surgeon until right before my surgery ! I had read about Dr. Poelstra online and had every bit of confidence in him. Not only was he a renowned surgeon, but his bedside manners were superb. It is not very often you meet a doctor who is very knowledgeable, explains what he is going to do and what he had to do, but he was truly concerned about me. His office staff and the hospital called twice within the week following my surgery to see how I was feeling! My recommendation is that if you need a spine surgeon, the. Dr. Poelstra is the one ! I am six weeks post op and am 99.9% where I was before my herniated disc.

We have x-ray and MRI capability and can do many fracture reductions and stabilizations. You can call the office to be seen the same day. In many instances, we will be able to get you seen immediately. Rest assured that we are here for your orthopedic needs. We are continuing to take all the necessary steps to ensure your safety during this time. Thank you very much for putting your trust in our care.
Yours Sincerely, The Robotic Spine Institute of Silicon Valley Team
